Welcome all to the brand new website of the Hong Kong Family Law Association. A lot of work has been put into the making over the past few years and it is very exciting to see that our new website is now up and running, showcasing our new logo at the same time.
The HKFLA was founded in 1986 at the suggestion of the then Attorney General, Michael Thomas, with the aim to provide a regular forum in which those interested in Family Law reform can discuss current issues, as well as consider and formulate law reform proposals. The HKFLA initially had 44 members. It has grown in numbers over the years and as of the date of writing we have over 200 paid-up members.
The HKFLA is dedicated to serving and furthering the development of Family Law and practice in Hong Kong. We hold regular talks on a monthly basis and occasional events for members. The highlight of the year has been our Christmas Quiz which takes place in December every year.
As the Chairperson of the HKFLA for almost three years, I still get excited to be in the position to chair one of the most- if not the most- close knitted, fun and friendly community within the legal industry. Although we had experienced a lot of uncertainties in the past few years due to the pandemic, with the enthusiasm and commitment of our members to Family Law and practice in Hong Kong, we were able to continue hosting our monthly educational talks online throughout the pandemic. This could not have been made possible without the care and dedication of all the HKFLA members.
Having the social gathering restrictions relaxed and finally lifted last year was definitely the most exciting thing for us. We were able to resume our physical meetings at the Hong Kong Club, and hosted a party for HHJ Melloy’s to celebrate her career in the Family Court on 16 September 2022, which was the first major event that the HKFLA held since our 30th Anniversary Celebration in November 2016. Our next major event will be the upcoming Modern Families Conference to be held on 6 to 7 September 2024 with a very exciting programme in store. I hope to see you all there.
We will continue to commit to promoting the study and improvement of family law and practice and to representing our members in furthering and facilitating the development of the Family Law and practice in Hong Kong. However, we will not be able to do it without your support. Please continue to support us, join our regular educational talks and participate in our events. I cannot guarantee you will definitely have fun (but we usually do), but you will most likely be able to find like-minded persons with equal amount of love and passion in Family Law and practice as you do.
See you in our next event/ talk!
